You Can Be Productive at Work… and Still Miss What Matters

What if your busiest days at work are missing the moments that matter most?

It is easy to measure your workday by what you accomplish. Tasks completed, goals achieved, and responsibilities handled all give a sense of progress. However, from a spiritual perspective, productivity is not the ultimate goal—fruitfulness is.

When Scripture talks about redeeming time, we tend to default to efficiency or better workflow management. In reality, it is pointing to something deeper: using your time in a way that reflects God and impacts people.

This becomes very real in everyday work situations.

You might be moving quickly through your day when a coworker shares something personal. You feel the tension between staying on schedule and slowing down to listen. In that moment, the Holy Spirit is inviting you into something more than productivity. He is inviting you to respond with presence, care, and intentionality. So you take a scheduled break or agree to talk with your coworker after work… either way, you act accordingly.

That moment may not show up on a performance review, but it carries eternal value.

Walking with the Holy Spirit at work means becoming aware of these moments and responding differently. It means recognizing that your time is not just for completing tasks, but for representing Christ through your interactions.

There is also a subtle challenge that comes with success in the workplace. You can build a strong career, achieve recognition, and accomplish significant goals, yet still feel a lack of deeper fulfillment. That tension often points to something important—you were not created just to produce results. You were created to live with purpose alongside God.
